Alignment after engine and gearbox replacement

Pilot boats are in demand every single day and have to withstand some of the toughest conditions out there. As everywhere in shipping, every day the boat doesn't have to sit high and dry counts. So pilot boat operators need solutions that are fast, precise and don't turn into a major operation — Analyzed. Corrected. Done.

Alignment of gearbox with XT770

Project Description

Regular maintenance prevents serious damage.

Regular maintenance of these boats also includes the scheduled replacement of the gearbox. For this, the engine-gearbox unit is removed, the gearbox is replaced in the workshop, and the unit is then reinstalled and aligned in the boat. Before the boat can return to service, the entire line from the gearbox flange to the shaft bracket bearing has to be checked and, if necessary, corrected.

Technical Requirements

The engine room of a pilot boat offers very little space, and the stern tubes are small. A laser tracker or other larger systems simply wouldn’t be practical here. The XT950, on the other hand, is compact enough to be mounted directly inside the bores and on flanges — and it’s ready to measure in no time.

Work Performed

The propulsion line was measured in two steps. The laser transmitter was mounted in the shaft bracket bearing and pre-aligned to the gearbox flange. In the first step, we measured from the shaft bracket bearing to the stern tube (only one bearing in this case); in the second step, from the shaft bracket bearing to the gearbox flange. Simple setup. Fast, high-quality result.
